Introduction to backpacking in the great outdoors: Henry W. Coe State Park

Great news everyone! Summer of backpacking is officially here in Bay Area! Get your packs ready for the epic journey!

Need inspiration for adventure? Check this video out!

For those who never done backpacking camping before: welcome to the club! I hope you find something useful in today’s post!

Take these suggestions and you will transform into outdoor fanatic in no time. Ready?

…But first, let me share these snapshots of recent backpacking trip to Henry W. Coe State Park to amp up your expectation!

5 Tips for Backpacking Starters.

If this is your first time, or been awhile since you’ve done backpacking here’s some tips to get you straight on trail in no time.

(1) Collect essential gears for backpacking.

When I first started backpacking, I did not have the right gears to situate my temporary residence in the woods overnight. Sleeping gears that I had, for example, was for car camping that are much bulkier and heavier than ultra lightweight gears designed for backpacking. In backpacking camping, every ounce of weight counts and it is essential to get ultra lightweight and compact gears.

REI has useful backpacking gears list for absolute newbies. I would also check the weather and environment of backpacking destination to pack the gears accordingly (e.g., extra layer of clothing,  sleeping bag, bear canister etc). It is always good idea to carry extra pair of socks if you are going to seaside trail with capricious weather (Lost Coast Trail and Point Reyes for example) and flip flops/sandals are ESSENTIAL for post hiking chill by the campground 🙂

(2) Navigation and Positive Attitude for “Getting Lost.”

Although most hiking trails in Henry Coe State Park are clearly marked on the maps and there are sign posts to point you to the right path, you are always prone to “getting lost” when backpacking into the depth of wilderness. It is good idea to get one of big maps sold at the visitors center and have one of the experienced hikers in the group to take lead on navigation.

They successfully can make you get back in the game and impress your partner then also you can quietly intake this drug and you will never be able to use it successfully with others, unless you have successfully experienced cialis online it. But you have to take care of getting the viagra pill genuine medicine and popularly known as Kamagra. This is often a very costly procedure, and there are cialis 20mg associated risks involved. It is also sildenafil tab known among people by the name erectile dysfunction. Getting lost is part of the journey and makes the adventure exciting, so keep your positive attitude and accept that sometimes it is necessary to reverse the trail to get back on the right track. Similarly, it is recommended to hike with group when you are exploring the big park like Henry Coe that has over 300 miles of trails to explore! Necessary detour and shortcut often take the hikers off the main trail so it is good idea to keep track of mileage and visual reference on the map to get the sense of where you are. GPS or apps that tracks mileage is quite useful in this case.

(3) Stay Hydrated (…and not thirsty, my friend).

When you are hiking under the glorious afternoon sun with over 25lbs of pack on back, you are burning your energy faster than usual. It is good idea to keep high calorie energy bars in your pockets where easily accessible to snack on during the hike. Most importantly, stay hydrated throughout the hike to prevent injuries and symptoms from sun heat.

Trails that we took in Henry Coe State Park was blessed with constant exposure to rushing creeks to refill water bottles. If you are backpacking beginner, it is probably best to select the park that has plenty of water source to fill up your water bottles to avoid packing in heavy load of water. For this reason I would consider desert hike is much difficult backpacking option compared to woodsy mountainous trails in Sierra that has rich water sources. Water filtration system such as Platypus GravityWorks comes in very handy when you are hiking in bigger group (6+) as it holds large quantity of water and does not require manual squeezing which I am getting used to with my Sawyer Mini. To top up hydration strategy, electrolyte tablets like the ones Nuun produce are very effective and I use it on every backpacking trip including Cusco to Machu Picchu and Mt. Whitney Trail. Electrolyte and water are two things that do not want to exhaust during the hike.

(4) Smart Food Strategy.

Best part of camping is food. I love eating, and especially on camping trips I find any food to taste better. For backpacking, I would recommend packing something lightweight and loaded with calories. Rehydration meal is always great idea and there are many companies out there with variety of menu designed for different diet preference. My personal favorite is this Pad Thai that comes with packets of sauce and peanuts. Portable stove is a must carry if you are planning to eat these foods as they need hot water. One thing to note about elevation: Cooking time will increase at higher elevation due to altitude, so if you are exhausted and desperate to consume food immediately rather than wait for over 30 minutes to cook meal you might want something else to satiate your hunger in a meantime.

(5) Sharing the Weight.

Benefit of backpacking in a group is the opportunity to share the supplies. First backpacking trip is always full of wonder and realization, and you will soon learn about useful tools and tips from the experts! Even if you are not confident about the right gears to buy, chances are someone else in the group has them for share. Ask if someone else in your group is interested in sharing tents, for example, and split the weight! Water filtration system is essential as I noted previously, but sometimes packing in water is necessary if there is no water supply near the campsites. You can circumvent the difficulty of carrying heavy weight by sharing the supplies and distributing the weight amongst the group. Win-win!

I once did backpacking hike to hot springs near Desolation Wilderness and there was one guy solely dedicated to cooking gourmet dinner for group! He had everything but sleeping bag, pad, and tent on the hike and cooked up some amazing grazed salmon (in aluminum made stove box!) with quinoa salad. Later I learned he is renowned camping chef who barters the gear weight for delicious meals…not a bad exchange.

Great Adventure Awaits.

Backpacking is so much fun and it’s one of my favorite outdoor activities of all time. All the pictures and video in this post are from recent trip to Henry W. Coe State Park, which is perfect place to get your feet wet (literally) in backpacking adventures.

Ultimate Road Trip Guide: Hidden Gems of Pacific Northwest

ROAD TRIP PACIFIC NORTHWEST: San Francisco to Portland by way of Terwilliger Hot Springs and Redwood National and State Parks.

Best attraction of driving in Northern California, particularly further up north of San Francisco and even further north of Mendocino County is…wait for it…amazing collection of redwood groves! Living in California for 7+ years, I am still discovering new faces of California every time I drive through this elongated coastal State. Hop on Highway 101 or Highway 5 and try driving north and south. You will find yourself in the middle of epic contrast between arid desert and lush greenery. California is nature’s wonderland.

Road trip in Northern California only requires loosely planned weekends. In other words, outgoing Californians like you and me can go on adventure any weekend – You can backpack in beautiful Lassen Volcanic National Park on a weekend or make a long drive up to Oregon for Crater Lake National Park, and of course you are absolutely accessible to Yosemite National Park if you are in the mood for serious nature recharge. Although the area has been closed for most part of last year due to fire, Big Sur and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is another awesome weekend getaway which can easily be combined with stopover in beautiful city of Monterey.

As you can see, there are many possibilities for epic weekends in Northern California and beyond.

This past Christmas break, I took impromptu road trip from San Francisco to Portland for woods, hot springs, beers, and good coffee!

oregon-terwilliger-hot-springs-usa-road-tripLeg 1 – San Francisco to Eugene, OR

Drive from San Francisco to Portland usually takes about 11 hours, which isn’t terrible if you are experienced road tripper but this could be rather exhaustive journey if you take it all in one haul.

A cat in the patio at Stacy’s house we’ve stayed in Springfield, OR. Stacy was wonderful Airbnb hostess that we came across and her house was beautiful. Highly recommended to stay with her on your next journey from SF to PDX or explore in Eugene.

On the first day of our road trip, we decided to lodge in Eugene, OR and visit Terwilliger Hot Springs (also known as Cougar Hot Springs) the next day. Terwilliger Hot Springs is natural hot springs in Willamette National Forest that flows right next to Cougar Reservoir. Stopover in soothing hot springs was brilliant idea especially in the cold winter weather!

Terwilliger Hot Springs was clean and nicely maintained natural pools in the middle of forests by the flowing river.

oregon-terwilliger-hot-springs-usa-road-tripHow to get to Terwilliger Hot Springs from Eugene?

  1. Hot Springs Parking Lot is approximately 55 miles east of Eugene.
  2. Pay $6 day pass fee to the park ranger either at the trailhead or at the pool. CASH ONLY.
  3. From the parking lot, it is about 0.25 mile easy trail walk to get to the pool. Clothing is optional. Soak and enjoy!

While you’re in Eugene, there are several great breweries and restaurants that need to be visited. Ninkasi Brewing Company is a small and cozy local brewery with heated patio in the back. This place is perfect for group gathering. Tap & Growler is another delightful stop for delicious Italian sandwich and many beers on tap.

Leg 2 – Portland, OR

I’ve visited Portland once before in 2014 and pretty much covered the essentials as seen in my old post here. Although I had great time then, this time was much enjoyable mostly owed to good company that I shared the trip with (lovely couple seen in the pictures).

Portland is synonymous to awesome breweries and coffees: Stumptown Coffee and Coava Coffee are two mandatory stops for coffee aficionados, and Cascade Brewing Barrel House and Commons Brewery are my new found loves for genuinely delicious pints of hoppy quench. If you are keen on good coffee and beer, I would recommend paying visit to above fine establishments.

oregon-portland-roadtrip-usa-wahkeena-multnomah-fallsAnother big appeal of Portland is its greenery.
One essential stop outside of the city is Wahkeena and Multnomah Falls. These waterfalls are easily accessible by car from Portland (mere 40-50 min drive).

oregon-portland-roadtrip-usa-wahkeena-multnomah-fallsNeedless to say, Multnomah Falls is one of the most popular destinations and gets very crowded throughout the year. I would recommend parking the car near Wahkeena Falls which is considerably less crowded than the Multnomah Falls parking area. You can access both waterfalls by hiking on short 0.5 mile trail path that connects the two.

During our visit in Portland, we have stumbled upon the Christmas Festival of Lights at The Grotto. This annual Christmas event in NE district was brilliant place to experiment with slow shutter speed setting on my Sony A7 and soak in the festive mood of the winter.

Leg 3 – Redwood National and State Park

On our drive back down to San Francisco, we’ve stopped at Redwood National and State Park and explored one of the world’s tallest redwood groves. This park is home for tall redwood trees including the famous Hyperion Tree tucked in the depth of arboreal labyrinth. The most important destination in this park, The Tall Trees Grove, is accessible only with permit that you can register for free at one of the visitor centers.

Here’s tips for fellow travelers planning to visit Redwood on the way from Portland to San Francisco:

  • Leave Portland in the early morning by 4am. This will give you sufficient time to enter the park and explore the Tall Trees Grove before reaching San Francisco at night.
  • Make a stop at Hiouchi Visitor Center to register for permit and receive lock combination to open the gate to the Tall Tree Grove Trailhead Parking.
  • It takes about 7 hours drive from Portland to reach the Tall Tree Grove Trailhead Parking. Buy yourself a can(s) of Stumptown Coffee cold brew — You will appreciate this decision later.

Redwood National and State Park is collection of forests that spreads along the Pacific coast, and therefore this region has very distinct microclimate throughout the year. Bring warm layer to accommodate for cold weather. Visiting the park is free, but you will need the issued permit in order to access certain parts of the preserved areas like the Tall Trees Grove.

Tall Trees Grove is located southeast of Orick town and can only be reached by moderate to strenuous 4 mile hiking to/from the parking lot.

How to reach the amazing Tall Trees Grove?

  1. Acquire visitor permit (FREE) at one of the visitor centers; I recommend Hiouchi Visitor Center since it is located along Highway 199 on the way from Portland!
  2. Get to the entrance gate to Tall Trees Grove Trailhead Parking (approximately one hour drive from Hiouchi Visitor Center) and use the *number combination* included with the permit to unlock the gate.
  3. Drive down the dirt road to reach the trailhead parking lot.
  4. Hike on maintained trail following the numbered spikes (1, 2, 3, and so forth) to reach the Tall Trees Grove loop.
  5. Gaze above your head to admire the spires of incredible tall redwood trees.

california-redwood-national-park-roadtrip-usa-tall-tree-trailIf you are National Geographic fanatics like myself, you probably heard about Hyperion Tree that is the giant of redwood tree towering above the rest of groves. While it is known this world’s tallest tree is still standing in Redwood National Park, its exact location is not disclosed to public (though you can Google it and locate the geological location…). Tall Trees Grove is, with my humble guess, pretty much the area where the mystic influence of Hyperion is in full swing. I can feel the presence of some incredible power in this area and I was struck by awe when I gazed upon the barely visible spires of tall trees. Although I’ve visited many redwood forests before, the energy that I could sense here was something very special and different from the others. Go there and you’ll figure.

I hope this information somehow aid you on your next journey plan!
If the season is right and time permits, you must also try and make a stop at Crater Lake National Park to complete the road trip experience.

Cheers!
