Towering Above Desert: Mount Charleston Peak in Nevada

Living in San Francisco, or anywhere near the water makes you easily forget how dry and exhausting desert weather can get. My recent trip to Las Vegas since the New Years hit me hard with this fact. Just a mere 45 minutes drive from Las Vegas city limit we’ve arrived at the Trail Canyon Trailhead in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. From there we started on 8.5 mile ascension to the Mount Charleston Peak, the eighth most prominent peak in lower 48 States (Note: most high peaks in North America are in Alaska which will not be fair comparison).

Knowing this is well above strenuous level hike, I filled my Camelbak with 2.5 liters of coconut water to optimize the electrolyte intake. This strategy has helped me reduce cramps and stay hydrated all along the dry dry dry trail winding up the rugged mountain.

Dragon Ball (i.e., home made trail mix crammed with dates, nuts, berries, vanilla essence, cacao and other awesome source of protein) that Jon prepared the night before was the power booster to drag our beaten legs and asses up the brutal elevation that ultimately led us to the location 11,918-ft above sea level.

At the top of Mount Charleston there were already handful of hikers signing the summit log and taking group photos. The girl in the picture below supposedly completed her last peak in Nevada that day (looks like she surely has something about climbing).
Sky was grey and hazy above our heads perhaps since we were so close to the clouds, which made it perfect for otherwise scorching hiking experience.
