3 basic tips to find your perfect camera for traveling

If you are not specialist in camera you probably ask your photo savvy friends this question: “which camera should I buy for my travel?” Even though your iPhone can shoot decent pictures and videos, it’s only gonna be decent. Do you want pictures of your dream trips to be less than AMAZING? Here’s something I want to share with you about travel photography.

Over the course of last 5 years or so, I have traveled and hiked around the world with various consumer model cameras from 35mm film to digital and makers from Canon to Yashica; and I have to say each one has its own merit and demerit.

If you are seriously considering to shoot films, you might want to read this post I’ve written about the organic beauty of film photography. Otherwise I’d say stick with digital camera. It’s much easier and versatile to shoot digital photos.

Are you ready to dive in?
Here’s 3 basic tips to help you search for ideal camera:

  1. Know your focal length.
Longer lens–also called telephoto lens–is a type of lens that gives cropping effect to your overall image. This is type of lens you want to use when you are not able to get closer to the photo subject (for example: lions impending to attack or angry people).
As a pro tip, this lens often gives dramatic and suspenseful look to the picture because it squashes the distance between you and the subject hence makes it appear larger than the actual size. It’s kind of like seeing through a telescope.

I use zoom lens that stretches out to about 100mm to shoot photos of resting birds and people in the streets etc without scaring them off.

On the other hand, shorter lens (also called wide lens) expands the horizon and shows everything that unfurls in front of photographer’s eyes. Shooting Grand Canyon for example is best done with shorter lenses like 18mm to capture the big scale.

FOR THE STARTER: If you get the camera that has zoom lens with focal length ranging between 25mm to around 100mm you are in a pretty good shape. Extremely wide lenses (or fish eye) and super telephoto lenses are only for crazy people 🙂 I find my “sweet” focal length is between 50-55mm which I find most of my photos are ended up shot on. So I usually just take one prime lens in this focal length for my travel. Simple as that.

Luckily, urology clinics in Singapore are buying that cheapest viagra easily accessed and the doctors working in them are the experts in this field.

  3. Know your shooting condition.
If you are traveling to somewhere rainy like London/Seattle, you might want to pack something to protect your camera from downpour unless the camera is weather-sealed. If you are hiking along the coastline and trekking through the breaking tides, you MUST be prepared to protect your camera from direct contact with sea water. If you are doing backpacking hike, you might want to pack lighter camera to balance your hiking equipment. Say, Olympus PEN E-P3 or higher end Sony NEX-7 would be great for 2-3 night backpacking trip.

I also want to highlight on ISO setting. ISO determines how well your camera takes pictures under little-to-no natural lighting. Higher the ISO number your camera will do well in dark vision. HOWEVER, most cheap cameras will add grainy noises to the pictures when shot with extremely high ISO setting. Sony’s A7 series are still the reliable forerunners on the low light photography game, and their S-series are even known to expose pictures under the moonlight and leave almost zero noise.

If you are looking for something more casual, pretty much any cameras today has reasonable ISO range so just test shoot something with high ISO setting and see how camera registers the darkness. Apertures on lenses (designated by alphabet “f” followed by numbers like 1.8, 2.8, 3.2,…) also determines how much light can travel into the camera, so if you use lenses that can open to very wide apertures like f-1.4 and f-1.8 your camera will do quite well in the dark places. For this reason I use “bright” 55mm Zeiss lens that opens to f-1.8 on my Sony A7 MK2 that has very high ISO capability (ISO 25,600) and shoot dark cathedrals and night streets with just this one camera.

  4. Video capability.
If you are ok with mediocre 15 second Instagram videos or Snapchat you can ignore this part. Otherwise, for serious documentarian like myself, recording perfectly in-focus steady crisp video clips of adventure is BIG deal.I have experience shooting videos on my Canon 5D MK2 and was quite happy with the quality of video. I’m not really serious about shooting 4K resolution or anything “cinematic” but do care having decent light exposure and audio recording. In most ways 5D met my expectation, but it was heavy camera and quite bulky for backpacking especially for outdoors.

So I decided to pick up Sony A7 MK2 last year to see what this world’s first mirrorless full frame camera can do. After shooting bunch of videos and photos using A7 MK2, I am happy to say this camera meets most of my need for travel shooting. 5-axis image stabilization system works pretty well to keep my video steady though it still gives wobbliness in action shots, and auto-focus functionality is very smooth and spot on!

I really like this camera and I have taken to many hardcore outdoor adventures including Lassen Volcanic National Parks and even Machu Picchu. From event shoots to camping trip documentation, this camera serves well with its light-weight body and full frame HD video capability 🙂

Bottom line is, it is really your style that determines which camera best suite your need for traveling. Are you a foodie photographer? Landscape aficionado? Adventure photographer? Or rather stick with iPhone and selfie sticks? If carrying around the reliable camera is your style, then now you have 3 basic specs to look at on whichever the camera your friend or Amazon recommend to you 🙂

iPhone camera may quickly die with battery exhaustion and not as effective with cloud sync when the access to network is very limited. You have no such hindrance with actual camera if you carry extra packs of rechargeable batteries and memory cards to keep the snaps going.

I hope you found this post somewhat helpful, and please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions or need recommendations on camera gears for traveling. If you like this article, please share with your friends and leave comments with your opinions on travel photography.

Bon voyage!

5 activities that turn your long travel layover into bonus happy hour

International travel has become much affordable these days, and it is really up to traveler’s will to visit as many dream destinations as possible under calculated budget.

There are possible methods to keep the travel cost low by stretching out the traveling time, and many travel blogs and writers talk about this. If you follow me on Twitter @PoachedEggQuest then you know how I share lot of these information 🙂

In general, the longer you travel the wiser your relationships become with your wallet. You will become much keen on land transportation that takes long time but cheaper than air transportation. For example, here’s some blog posts that give advise on traveling two most popular backpacking destinations on train:

Slower Traveling: How to Buy Cheap European Train Tickets (Plus: Travel Itinerary from Germany to Sweden)

Simple with a smile: Seeing Thailand on night train

But of course, for many worker bees in today’s society it is not easy to take months of time off from work. I myself have trouble making time for longer traveling so I am inclined to shortcut the travel itinerary by flying.

Today, I want to share tips on how to find reasonable deals on flights and how to deal with inconvenient indirect flights with least stress and even adding some exciting bonus activities to your total agenda!

Finding Cheap (but not too shitty) Flights:

If you already have particular places you want to visit in mind and looking for the cheapest flight for selected dates, I would definitely recommend starting your search with Momondo and Skyscanner. The former website uses search engine to pull the comparable pricing from travel companies around the web, so it’s the best shot to find the lowest fare.
Kayak is also quite useful website for finding low fare on flights, rental car, as well as hotel accommodation and their Explore feature surely will inspire you to bubble up the travel aspiration.

NOTE: Always look out for travel duration as very often the flight deals on these websites include flight transfer time and may add extra day or two to get to the destination. It will be a bummer to learn one precious day of vacation get wasted away in transportation. So be sure to check the start and end dates! Very important!

I will also give you tips on how to manage long layover frustration later in this post 🙂

Flight deal for intermediate traveholics:

  • Airfare Watchdog is a very good source for cheap flight deals. Follow these guys on Twitter for low airfare alert.
  • The Flight Deal is another cool website that lists special flight deal per travel origins.
  • Flyertalk forum is my favorite source to construct ideas for next trips and often stumble upon hot flight deals. This is traveholics’ online community where people constantly talk about the mileage run deals and exchange good deals on flights. You may need to do some study and learn the forum language first, but this is very good source to get your travel passion amped up.

Downside/Upside of Cheap Flights:

Not all the good things come together seamlessly, and sometimes you have to deal with inconvenient layovers that may stretch out for hours to days. So it is good idea to always do research on various database to find out which flight itinerary makes best sense for you. If your flights are making multiple stops on the way back home and include overnight layover in unfamiliar countries it could become very stressful.

However, if you look at this positively the long layover also means you have chance to explore new territories. In order to avoid negative impact of layover to your awesome trips, here’s some tips on how-to make best out of your long layovers (NOTE: these tips are only applicable in situation with layovers over 8 hours):

  1. Join the free city tour offered by airport.

Yes. Many airports actually offer FREE city tour to promote local tourism. It is the best way to spend your long hours until the next transfer flight! Here’s some examples of airports that host free tour (source: Airfare Watchdog).

I joined the free bus tour in Seoul two years ago between my connection flights from Bangkok to San Francisco, and I was surprised how neatly it was organized despite only had about 8 hours from morning until late afternoon there.
During the tour we stopped at the palace and visited the city canal and ate awesome soon tofu/bulgogi with added incitement of ice cream shop stopover. My layover and first time visit to Seoul couldn’t have been better.

2. Get on your shoes and explore the urban city life by night.

Overnight layover usually asks you this question: “Do I want to book the hotel near the airport, or just sleep inside the airport terminal? (If lucky to find the space big enough to stretch your legs that is).”

If you are very tight on budget and ok with sleeping uncomfortably the latter option may be possible, but for most regular travelers it is likely the hotel option is smarter decision. In my case, “sleeping” is actually the least appealing choice when I get the opportunity to visit new places. I want to make the best out of my travel time. So I tend to leave the airport and explore the city overnight then return to the airport few hours before the flight departure; this worked surprisingly well for me when I visited Frankfurt in Germany during my connection from Madrid to LA.

Frankfurt, or any other urban cities, is very interesting place for night photography: high rise skyscrapers reflected on the river, futuristic architectures emitting neon lights, empty plaza with gigantic opera house illuminated by spotlight, street arts under the glowing signs…all of these are worthy of strolling around at night to capture on camera. I had my headphones on with obligatory minimal techno music and explored the streets for some photo adventure.

Before dawn I caught the train back to the airport and caught one hour nap on the bench before the TSA workers started to invite people inside the gates. One advise: MAKE SURE YOU SET ALARMS SO YOU DON’T SLEEP OFF AND MISS THE FLIGHT. I nearly did this haha.

Another nice thing about overnight layover is this: golden sunrise from the airport.

Overnight exploration can also work perfectly in Tokyo for example, where the city is known for no-sleep lifestyle. In Tokyo, you can go directly to the city central by express train (if you are coming from Narita Airport) and by monorail (from Haneda Airport) usually in less than hour one-way. There are many all night karaoke bars, Internet cafes, and restaurant chains that you can spend the hours until dawn. Be mindful that the first train usually starts around 4-5am so make sure you have plenty of time to get back to the airport to catch the flight 🙂

3. Reconnect with your friends.

You often forget that you know someone that live in your layover location. Look up your friend(s) on facebook and shoot messages before you start your trip and potentially meet up! During my recent travel to Peru, I had a full day layover in Mexico City so I made it into a perfect reunion with my old friends. I wrote about the experience in the post below:

How to live in Mexico City for one day (or 18 hours to be precise)

018

Take the advantage of long wait and reconnect with your friends!

4. Free city walk tour.

If your long layover falls during the day, joining the free walking tour is great idea. For example SANDEMANs New Europe Tours hosts 100% free walking tour run by volunteers on gratuity basis. This is perfect option if you want a quick sightseeing and also meet and connect with other travelers in doing so.

Here’s some of my experience with free walking tour in London:

5. Meditate

Sometimes the most important thing that you forget to do during the travel is to create time and space to reflect on your recent adventure and sort it in your head. I usually keep journal during the travel but sometimes writing the overall experience in structured text is hard thing to do on-the-go. This is why I think “detached from the world” feeling of the airport terminal is actually helpful in achieving some tasks that I put aside during the trip. After all, every travel experience leaves certain after taste and that’s what makes it so appealing. Here’s ultimate zen statement for traveholics: doing nothing can be as grand as doing random things just to pass the time 🙂

INFLUX: Oakland’s new FREE monthly party lighting the night up

It was not a groundbreaking news to hear The Night Light — a.k.a. Oakland’s favorite neighborhood bar in Jack London — has another cool event on the horizon.

In the past, they’ve organized some impressive DIY-style annual music festival and led me to discover some cool local acts like Unconditional Arms and Halcyonaire. So I was very excited to see how the new event will take form.
