For those already in the know this may not be a breaking news but I will say it anyways: Oakland has got something interesting going on in their music scene. Today, I would like to introduce you to Oakland’s very own UNCONDITIONAL ARMS.

When I first saw Unconditional Arms playing their homeground show at The Night Light, I was immediately hooked by their sensational and carefully woven instrumental crescendo.
Musical style often classified as post-rock by the peers of likers of The Explosions in the Sky and The American Dollar is basically an instrumental rock comprised of two guitars cradled by Jeff Wright and Chris Micheal, bass guitar by Randy Staat, and powerful drums by Ross Traver. Nothing more and nothing less — hence sounds simple and pure.

It’s easier to be seen than be said, so here it is:

The project has started two years ago as the gift to Jeff’s son, Owen, who has just turned two years old last week. After releasing the collection of work in the form of full-length album Kinship, dudes of Unconditional Arms stayed true to their instrumental sound and expanded their discography as well as their camaraderie with other artists ins and outs of Bay Area continuing their mission of delivering gifts and movement.

The band has recently released 3-track split album with Threading on Native Sounds which they contributed with their signature quiet/dynamic sounding “Haunt.” They are planning to do more releases with other bands this year as well as releasing a live recording of their repertoire; this was the main motivation behind the installation of studio show at SANTO Studio in Oakland.

Engineers and staffs at SANTO was especially supportive in making this studio event to reality: “Jonah [who is mixing our recording upstairs right now] was very avid about coming out to our shows and work with us, which is very important for this [live recording] because he’s already seen us live handful of times so he knows what to expect,” Says Jeff excitedly as he describes how he found the studio on the Internet and immediately fell in love with the unique look of the place. “We’ve been in couple of different studios in last couple of weeks, not to discredit any of them all of them are cool but this one definitely has the most character.” Jeff describes the nice touch of decors and inviting mood of SANTO was one definite decision factor for event venue. “Strong vibe” as Ross adds with consent, SANTO Studio has something that can not easily be found in other recording studios.

SANTO Studio is relatively new facility, as this ex-autoshop recording studio opened its door just a little over half a year ago and is still in the process of becoming one of the most beautiful recording studios in town. The studio named after Mexican wrestler El Santo is home of professional engineers and also a place for local musicians to do their intimate live shows. Simply put, SANTO has potential of becoming the next big hub for local music scene in Oakland.

“I feel like I can spend lot of time writing and recording music and be comfortable [at SANTO]. That’s big when you are in the studio because being in the studio sucks a lot of sometimes,” Chris says confidently as he explains how the rustic and homey ambiance of the studio makes the recording process much enjoyable.
It was easy to see even from the audience member’s perspective everyone at the event was enjoying the laid back vibe and having a good time. Chill time at SANTO almost reminded me of summer nights at some old friend’s garage. Obviously, the only significant difference being the top-notch quality of sound engineers 🙂

地元熱がアツいベイエリアだからこそ、ローカルの音楽にもしっかりとアンテナを張り巡らしておきたいものです。サンフランシスコの東隣のオークランドという街はA’sやウォーリアーズなどのスポーツチームの本拠地でもあり、昔から低所得民の多く居住する地ということで価格の高騰化した現在のサンフランシスコとはまた異なる側面を持つ土地です。
良く言えば割と安く住める場所ですが、悪く言えば治安が悪い街と言うことになります。しかしラフな土地だからこそ芽生える音楽のカルチャーというのもありますので、そこは無視できない難しい関係にあります。

オークランドに有望なアーティストたちが多い理由には幾つかセオリーが立てられると思いますが、僕はひとつにこの土地に根付いているDIY精神が最大の理由だと思います。振り返ってみてもベイエリア発信のpunk rockとかhip hopはその核心が大体オークランドから始まっています。サンフランシスコにも勿論そういったところはありますが、少人数のオーディエンスを口コミ(facebook含む)で呼んでスタジオライブをしたり、地元のアーティストたちのサークルで自主的にフェスティバルを企画したりするのはオークランド方面のほうが活発のように感じます。また後の投稿も考えていますが「924GILMAN」という伝説的なDIYのライブハウスもこのオークランドの隣のバークレーにあります。

長ーい前置きになってしまいましたが、今回はそんなオークランドを拠点に活動するバンドUNCONDITIONAL ARMS（以下UA）について書かせて頂きたいと思います。

僕とUAの出会いは2014年初頭、同じくオークランドのダウンタウンにあるThe Night Lightというバーでのフェスでの事でした。地元のバンドが沢山参加しているDIYなイベントで、結構バラエティーに富んだラインナップだったと記憶しています。オークランドで毎年開催されるBurger Boogalooなるpunk rock onlyなフェスに参加するようなバンドが多く、演奏者のテクもピンキリでしたが、そんな中３本の弦楽器とドラムだけでストイックな演奏をするインストバンドの姿が自然と冴えたのでした。

UAの音楽スタイルは言ってみればThe Explosions in the Skyや初期のThe Appleseed Castに通ずるpost-rockというアンビエントなインディーズロックを踏襲しているのですが、これが馬鹿正直なほどに純粋で好感を持たざるをえないのです。ビデオのインタビューでも答えてくれましたが、バンド開始の動機がギタリストのJeffの息子に捧げる贈り物だったというのも微笑ましい。以来バンドはGifts and Movementと銘打って大切な人に捧げる音楽を製作し続けています。

息子のOwenくんは先週で丁度二回目の誕生日を迎え、UAの活動にもひとつのまとまりが付いた段階ということで今回はライブ・レコーディングを兼ねたスタジオ・ライブを行うと決めたとの事です。
会場は半年ほど前に新しくオープンしたばかりのSANTO Studio。これまたオークランドらしいオープンな造りのレコーディングスタジオで、元々は車の修理屋だったのを改造した正真正銘のDIY建造物！壁にはこれでもかと言うくらいギターのコレクションが掛けられ、シャッターの外には客やスタッフがビールを片手にくつろげるちょっと良い感じの庭まであります。本当にオーナーのこだわりを感じさせる味のある空間でした。

UA、この日のライブも最高でした。インターミッションを挟んだ２時間に及ぶセットは彼らの出発点から今日までの活動を一つにまとめた集大成的な流れで、持ち味である静と動のコントラストが見事に再現されていました。インタビューでJeffが言っていたとおり「スタジオ音源ではなくて、ライブでしか表現できない自分たちの演奏を記録として残したいんだ」という願望は見事に形になっていました。ドラマーのRossが激しくビートを刻むところとか、ギタリストのChrisが音の歪みを求めてギターをガンガン叩くところなんかも彼らがライブ・バンドであることをしっかりと認識させ、ボーカル無しの音楽ながらその躍動感溢れるリズム隊で内から突き動かす迫力はさすがでした。

年内にもこのスタジオ・ライブでの模様を映像・音源化したものがリリースされる様子なので、そちらも注目です。
