#017 – Verve Coffee Roasters’ 3rd Annual Record Swap + Block Party (Santa Cruz, CA)

(日本語は下にあります↓)

Santa Cruz, California, is a calm little beach town that keeps your shoes gritty and eyes glittering from the endless summer sunshine.
This town is a home to my all time favorite Verve Coffee Roasters and also a cradle of boardwalk promenade and great rock ‘n roll concert venue, that is The Catalyst, and oh not forget to mention Streetlight Records right next to the music venue that also plays a crucial part in Santa Cruz vibes.

By way of long appraisal of this special California town, I had a wonderful opportunity to visit music and art event that took place at Verve Coffee Roasters’ headquarter this past August. It may have passed few month since the event happened but as you can see in this video it was exquisite event and still fresh in my memory:

Marking the third year of inception, Record Swap + Block Party was more than an average local street fare: vendors set up tents to sell used/new vinyls and invited delicious local bakery Manresa Bread and of course, endless cups of great coffee brewed right for you by amazing baristas! There literally could not be any other place like it.

The event also showcased wide array of local music talents including Halcyonaire (who are featured in the above video) as well as Unconditional Arms (I’m telling you, these guys are just getting better and better each time I see them live!) performed inside the roastery in quite intimate setting.  There was also a popup vintage Revival Tintype Studio booth making awesome tintype photo prints behind the pyramids of coffee bean bags.

I could rightfully claim that I am coffee aficionado considering the amount of that dark and stormy beverage I consume every day. Verve Coffee Roasters is definitely the best producer of fine cups (especially notable is their nitro cold brew, so creamy and not too acidic) I can savor dedication and commitment in each drip that soars above all A-OK caffeine fixers. Simply it’s the best.

The concept of record swap hit me with big surprise as I have never been to Verve’s headquarter storefront on Bronson Street. I’ve only been to their modest storefront on Pacific Avenue during the day trip or pit stop before catching shows at The Catalyst and that location is tiny.  Naturally, I underestimated the scale of this event. Turn out was beyond my expectation, and it was just nice to see how the record trading culture is still strong on street level to keep the healthy life cycle of *good* music.

What captivated me the most was the collection of great records that extended from reggae, acid jazz, 80s hardcore punk, and new wave. Regrettably, I had to pass on buying records as I have been long away from my beloved turntable since the move from LA to London, but otherwise totally would have dug into that bin containing slew of classics including Minor Threat and Charlie Parker records.     010

Thank you Verve Coffee Roasters and all the talents that I came across and shared some good stories with. I will be there again next year!

Hey, in case you are curious about that “elephant” painting inside the facility… I found this write up and time-lapse video of its creation.

#016 – Pitch Slappers (San Mateo, CA)

P L A Y  B A L L ! !

Here comes the first day of October. It’s getting chilly here in Bay Area and we are still lingering to the warmth that Indian summer left behind. Although the day is getting shorter, the season of outdoor sports is not over yet. Here’s the video report to keep you moving until the weather gets too cold (and excuses kick in):

Attending Pitch Slappers game brings me back memories of my adolescent years spent playing in little league. I used to play in baseball team that never won a single game. Naturally, I never grew persistent on playing team sports thereafter but I still vaguely remember that one game I made a perfect catch and further prevented our team from losing scores which ultimately led to the best result in our entire team history: Draw Game.

Pitch Slappers game is fun to watch. I quite enjoy holding a beer can in hand and watch the colleagues pitch and hit the balls and make the complete diamond (when I am watching the game from bleacher). Whole vibe is pretty chill and it’s not overly serious. People come out after work to cheer for the team and leave or stick around for beer and pizza afterwards. I’m an infrequent attendee but whenever I make it to the game it’s always been a good time.
So in the most recent game attended, I decided to shoot some photos and videos of the team from the dugout.

The official league game was won by forfeit (opponent team was short of a player therefore we won) and it was followed by unofficial game which was also won by fair play! Kevin (#11) hit home run this evening, but I was too busy taking pictures and video of bats in the dugout and completely missed it. Sorry Kevin.

#015 – 924 Gilman (Berkeley, CA)

Changed to comfortable sneakers; dropped off my stuffy jacket in the car; grabbed the low-light calibrated Sony A7II; and oh some pairs of earplug in case of bombarding sound assault.

Here I am in my late 20s entering the now familiar facade of punk rock mecca otherwise known as Gilman.

My first attendance to punk show was to see a slew of underground hardcore bands in the basement of Shinjuku ACB (live house) in Tokyo. I was 16 or so at the time, and disadvantaged by the fact of living in the remote island every opportunity to visit my homeland has turned into a grand opportunity to check out some cool bands and sound style that I was into at the time. Bands that I saw there — Endzweck, the stiff, Nitro Mega Prayer, and Bane — were raising their hyper realistic parabola antennas to emit cacophonic transmission that intersected with my expectation.

If you haven’t been to punk shows in Japan, let me tell you straight up it’s an experience. It’s quite different from here in the US.
First of all, show goers in Japan doesn’t consider smoking cigarette inside the music venue as impolite activity. I’m pretty sure this is illegal anywhere in metropolitan areas of US, but it is just common thing to see in Japan. Not only this naturally occurring smoke effect inside the venue appears rather strange part of culture, it is also very common to see even a small studio size show is quite well attended by people. I have never attended a single studio show in Japan that was not packed like rush hour commuter train. These smaller shows are usually high in DIY spirit starting from tiny refreshment bar and distribution of zines. To make it even more interesting, most of the bands that play at these venues typically draw large fan followers from wide age range as well as cross genre and music popularity. I am confident to say that musical taste of common music listeners in Japan is quite diverse and ever so open to new discovery in comparison to general audience in the US. There isn’t really a clear border between underground and mainstream music in Japan and many interesting things has happened in the music industry that further blurred that line.

I still remember the inexplicable “thrill” that I felt when I first climbed down the narrow smokey stairways to the bottom of Shinjuku ACB. There was zero sign of hipsters or scenesters down there, just a pack of common people who just finished their shitty day at the office or school standing there waiting patiently for music to start. It was this live house environment that greatly influenced me in digging into underground music and expand my taste palette.

924 Gilman is the mecca of Bay Area punk rock where people in the know go regularly to enjoy the music in the way they are intended. Local legends like Green Day, Operation Ivy, and Rancid all hold their roots deep down at this place and thus it is continued to be recognized as one of the most important cradle of punk rock music in Northern California.

Although its tattered and graffitied interior may quickly arouse alert signal to upper class audience who are used to cocktail serving refined concert venues, this is the place to be if you are going to see the legendary (or soon to be legend) punk rock acts. There is really nowhere like Gilman that makes me feel like going to a great punk rock show and also gives me that thrill that I used to taste when I first attended the show as a kid.
