What makes the summer afternoon in the botanical gardens more relaxing and elegant? How about some background music of soothing piano concerto.
I have stumbled upon “Sunset Piano, Opus IV Flower Piano” at San Francisco Botanical Garden on one Sunday afternoon in July; and quickly captivated by the aural magic of beautiful pianos played by professional musicians and passersby. It was a perfect complement to the floral scent of summer garden.

I am no piano player myself, but the idea of letting anyone to play the instruments in the middle of beautiful flower gardens was fascinating nonetheless. Essentially, the event set stage for everyone to be part of the concert experience; by not only encouraging people to play the keys, but also become acquaintance with unique value each piano possesses. Each piano in the garden is different in size, makes, and possibly in age (again, I am no piano connoisseur to see more than that) which makes each one of twelve pianos very special and worth asking the other knowledgeable attendees about the history behind the instrument!

As I was navigating my way around the gardens using the map, I have encountered various pianists (please may I use this collective term instead of people just for this post?) Every pianist seems to have their own stories to tell through the act of striking the keys, wavering fingers over the keys, and tracing the memories of their life through the keys. Even the small children and amateur pianist with her sheet music on iPad blended nicely to the scenes.
The main concert took place in the middle of serene Redwood Grove. The pieces on the day’s repertoire was Ravel, Liszt, and Chopin performed gracefully by a female pianist positioned in the center of private auditorium surrounded by redwood trees and pouring sunshine. “Sunset Piano, Opus IV Flower Piano” was a neat little concert in the beautiful gardens that makes the summer season in San Francisco even better. サンフランシスコ市内のゴールデンゲート公園には植物をとおして世界中の自然環境を巡れる素晴らしい植物園（Botanical Garden）がありますが、そこにピアノの音色が加わりより一層エレガントな夏の一日を演出してくれる特別なイベントがあるんです。
Sunset Pianoというアートコラボレーターたちによる「現代にピアノの文化を浸透させていこう」という目的の上で催される屋外ピアノ・コンサート。今回の主催地となったSan Francisco Botanical GardenではFlower Pianoという名目で美しく開花しました。
植物園の至る所に設置された１２台のピアノは誰でも弾くことが許され、行きすがりの観光客や地元の音楽の先生などが思い向くままに鍵盤の上に指を泳がせていました。中には絶対プロだろうと思わせる演奏家もピアノに向かっており、曲の終わりには盛大な拍手喝采が鳴りました。
この植物園はゴールデンゲート公園でも最も環境が良い場所に位置しているので通常でも散歩や読書するのに最適の場所です（ちなみにサンフランシスコ市民は入場無料）。僕はサンフランシスコの隠れたオアシスの一つと考えています。この日は特に木漏れ日からピアノのハーモニーも聞こえてきて、植物園全体がひとつのコンサートホールになったような錯覚さえしました。
ベイエリアのあちこちでピアノを設置して行う開催地不定期のイベントなので、もしかしたら年内にまた別の場所で行き当たる機会もあるかもしれません。Sunset Pianoのホームページで今後の活動情報が得られるのでそちらを参考にされると良いと思います。
