San Francisco is home for rich art culture built by the hands of people who genuinely love this place and its history. Sigmund Stern is one lucky man whose name still remain synonymous with the beautiful park that was purchased by his wife Rosalie M. Stern in memory of him. Time has passed since then, but Stern’s legacy continues to spread its wings today. Every year since 1938, the park has been the permanent location for free summer concert series that basks in the golden sunshine and let the natives and transplants spend quality afternoon in the aromatic eucalyptus forest full of joy.

Marking its 78th installation, Stern Grove Festival opened its gate once again this year. We were still buzzed from the heat of Outside Lands Festival that took place in Golden Gate Park few weeks before; me and my friends headed out to the park to catch more relaxing and liberating festival of summer in San Francisco.
Stern Grove Park is located right off the major transit way on the 19th Avenue that is sandwiched between Sunset District and Lake Merced neighborhoods. The area beyond Twin Peaks and Sutro Tower distances itself from urban San Francisco city central and is quiet home for old time residents, hole-in-the-wall mom and pop restaurants, and of course …coyotes.Stern Grove Festival perfectly shows how we human are naturally designed to connect through the force of music. Music acts that we caught on this day, tUnE-yArDs and DakhaBrakha both delivered rhythmic afro-beats that irresistibly lifted the crowds off the ground to move the bodies along. Young, old, and super young were all synchronized into one collective group of dance circle. We were all here to enjoy the moment of being “here” and being alive.
If you are in San Francisco during the summer months, I highly recommend checking the event’s calendar and catch some awesome FREE concert 🙂 Be sure to arrive early so you can find good spot to spread the picnic blanket and connect with other people.

この夏季コンサートは１９３８年にサンフランシスコ交響楽団がこの場所でシンフォニーの演奏を行ったのを始めに、毎年この時期になると開催されるようになりました。当時から無料でサンフランシスコ市民に素晴らしい音楽を聴ける場所を提供する姿勢は変わらず、初期開催者たちの意思を現代まで引き継いでいる歴史ある音楽祭なのです。

今年は７８周年目を迎えました。すっかりサンフランシスコ市民に定着したイベントですが、街の中心地からだとTwin Peaksを越えた場所にあるということもあって、ダウンタウンに活動拠点を置いている人は意外とその存在は知っていても参加したことが無いと言う人も多いみたいです。参加は無料ですが、ボランティアや寄付に頼っている部分が大きいイベントなので、参加する際には僅かでも寄金はしましょう。
あと場所確保の為にも公園への到着はお早めに。

Mulford Gardens Art and Music Festival–which took place in a tiny park that I found by accident on the morning of the event–was not a place that I would otherwise stumble upon. Thanks to the power of Internet, I was lucky to find and experience some fine artist community that exists on the less advocated part of the Bay Area.

Have you seen the movie “Big Fish”? Do you remember that one hospitable village that could have been the permanent dream home for Ewan McGregor (and he didn’t stayed)? Well, San Leandro iteself was not that but the whole event that took place there kind of reminded me of that awesome village. Partially because I was not expecting much from the event; but also because it had that inviting mood that temps wanderers and travelers to stick around for long period of time to soak in the positive vibes.

Mulford Gardens Art and Music Festival was really a small town fair. サンフランシスコから湾を挟んで東、オークランドの南にあるサン・レアンドロはオークランド国際空港のすぐ近くということ意外はまるでノーマークの町でしたが、ひょんなきっかけからここでアート展示会が開かれるという事を知り試しに出掛けてみました。

車があると本当に便利なもので、BARTやらCALTRAINといった交通機関があってもつい楽をして車で出掛けてしまいます。この日もMULFORD GARDEN ART AND MUSIC FESTIVALの情報を入手してすぐに車でぶぶぶっと出動しました。

イベントはこんな感じでした：

イベントの開催されたサン・レアンドロそのものは閑散としていて、いたって普通の住宅地といった場所でした。前に僕の住んでいたグアムもそうでしたが、空港が近くにある町はなんとなく寂しい哀愁が漂っている印象です。

湾からそれほど離れていない住宅地の中にあるMULFORD GARDENSで行われたささやかな展示会はフォークダンスを教える人や、絵を描く人、音楽の演奏をする人などがそれぞれ思い思いのままに自分を表現し、訪れる客たちに自分の作品にまつわる逸話を語っていました。「猫」をモチーフにした作品のコレクションを紹介するアーティストや自分たちの音楽スタイルを「ヘビーなウッド」と形容するカントリー音楽コンビなど色とりどりで珍妙な人々の集まる風景はカリフォルニアならではと言ったところでしょうか。

映画「ビッグ・フィッシュ」に夢のように居心地のよい町が登場しましたが、この小さな公園で開催されたささやかなアート展示会にはそんな町で行われるたった一瞬の出来事のような趣がありました。それはきっとこの夏の気候と幼い頃の季節の思い出に重なる懐かしさを感じさせたからかも知れません。子供の頃に夏休みを過ごした市民会館のこととか、夏祭りのこととか、そういうものを思い出させるイベントでした。
