Phono del Sol Music & Food Festival is one of those music fests where you can definitely come as you are and have a blast time. Whether you had a gloomy weekday or not so nice weekend starter on Friday evening, you will find something nice for leisurely summer afternoon.
Attending three years in a row, this fest still has a special place in my heart; this is the very first music event that I have attended when I first moved to San Francisco three years ago. On the first year of attendance, I made new friends through the day’s activity and it remained as one of the brighter times in San Francisco. Every year when the summer comes it has became our tradition to meet at the bar in Mission District and walk on the colorful 24th street to Potrero del Sol Park for good times.
Phono del Sol is a small scale music festival that does fine job in getting their points across. Two small stages that keep the music going throughout the day, and the blocked off section of street filled with food trucks and beer gardens to enable the people to hang out all day without worrying about the world behind the fences.
This year’s musical highlight for me was Los Angeles based rock trio Marriages. I saw these guys performed at The Independent earlier this year in support for Boris and I was endeared by their aural presentation. Seeing the band performing outdoor in broad daylight was quite different experience, and it somehow reminded me of the refreshing effect that I’ve also witnessed in seeing War Paint (also Los Angeles-based band) at FYF festival several years back. I only wish if they were on the later time on the bill to coincide with sundown, but hey what more can I ask? Another performer on the bill, King Tuff, which I blatantly featured on the video also killed it. Playing the fuzzy garage rock that catapulted moshers and crowd surfers was the perfect soundtrack for the summer.
Great food quality of Phono del Sol puts the other festivals to shame. Option for food trucks and sweets seem to get improved every year, and this year I had nice margherita pizza at Mozzeria and delectable cookies and ice cream from Post Street Creamery. Two good combination to accompany with music.
One of the only complaint that I had in the past two years were the beer garden that gets extremely packed and takes forever to get to the beer tap. However, this year they expanded the beer garden section and moved the whole thing closer to the main stage. This was a big thumb up improvement I’ve seen. 
Phono del Sol takes place in Potrero del Sol Park, just a street down from the heart of Mission District on 24th Street. A walk to/from the venue is also fun as you pass through many “characters” of San Francisco.
All in all, Phono del Sol was as good as it ever was. Considering how many small music festivals are gaining popularity and growing sideways, I really hope this event will stay strong with the current size and stay true to dedicated fans (like me!). If you are in town next year for the summer, this is one of the must events to keep in mind! [end]

夏が来た！といえば音楽フェスの時期の到来です。
ここサンフランシスコは年間通して多数のイベントがありますが、その規模もまばらです。Outside Landsといったゴールデンゲートパークを貸しきって大御所を呼び集めるフェスもあれば、街の通りを閉鎖してその中で開催されるブロック・パーティーなんかも一年中やってます。
音楽と食文化の停まることのないサンフランシスコらしいイベントは沢山ありますが、出費や人混みのことを考えると・・・なかなか思い切って楽しめない、何てことを感じることも多々あると思います。そこで！（・・・という訳ではないけど）今回紹介するPHONO DEL SOL MUSIC & FOOD FESTIVALは色々な意味でリーズナブルな夏イベントです。
まずチケットの価格が$30（グループ割引だと$25）これはお徳でしょう。Outside LandsやTreasure Island Music Festivalが週末パスで$200から$300代なのに比べてこの破格なお値段。イベントの規模がものすごく小さい為、出演者はそれほどビッグネームではないのですがそこもまたインディーズ然としていてニクイんです。僕も過去2年連続で参加していますがThee Oh SeesやThao & the Get Down Stay Downなどといった地元のアツいアーティストたちが主役となるフェスなのでサンフランシスコの音楽シーンに触れる最高の機会でもあります。
今年の音楽のハイライトは先日、日本から来たBORISのサンフランシスコ公演で前座も勤めていたMarriagesというバンドでした。全体的にドローンとした暗めのサウンドを持つバンドなのですが、リードシンガーの女の子のサングラスが妙にキマってました笑。真昼間の炎天下で観るにはちょっとダークな音楽だったけど、全盛期のWar Paintを彷彿とさせるクールな演奏はこれからの成長を感じさせました。上のビデオのBGMでも使用させて頂いているKing Tuffはライブで本領を発揮するタイプのバンドで、まさしく夏だ！といったようなファジーでローファイなガレージパンクの音が観客を賑わせていました。モッシュやクラウドサーファーの数もこのバンドのセットが一番多かったです。
去年からでしょうかこのイベント、食事にも結構力が入った印象でした。通称「移動するレストラン」とも呼べるfood truckの数も多く、食べたいものが選べる環境が整ってました。僕はトラックに設置されたかまどで焼き上げてくれるマルガリータ・ピザを食べましたが、これが非常に美味でした。デザートにはアイスクリームをクッキーで挟んだアイス・サンドを食べましたが、さすがに暑い日ということもありお店の前には長い行列が出来ていました。他にもベジタリアンやビーガン向けの料理もあり、特殊な食制限のある人にも配慮されたいかにもサンフランシスコらしい（笑）軒並みが面白かったです。会場内に設置されたビアガーデンも去年までは音楽ステージから離れている上、スペースがかなり狭く息苦しかったのですが、今年は改善されてより広いスペースでより音楽に近づける空間に再構成されていました◎
サンフランシスコに来て三年目。毎年の恒例となっているこのPHONO DEL SOLですが、用意された音楽はもとより友達と遊ぶのに最適なゆるいイベントなので僕は気に入ってます。小規模の低予算フェスなので（笑）大型フェスのようなインパクトには欠けますが、そこがまた何となく適当で好ましいです。さすが「あまり期待せずに行ってみたら居心地のよかったフェス」にNo.1でランクインしているのも頷ける（嘘）。
あ、あとスケート（スケートボードのことです）やってる人は公園内のスケートパークで技に挑んでみるのもいいですよ。

Brokeoff Mountain Trail Head was somewhat hidden from the main road, it was tuck away in the depth of bushes and we had to walk for about half a mile from Southwest Information Center building via curvy road to reach the entrance. The long expectation to reach the trail head somewhat reminded me of the scene from Stand by Me only lacking the cameo appearance by wild deers. 
The summit of Brokeoff Mountain offered great view of Lassen Peak in the distance as well as patches of green speckled over beige mountain range. Time passed slowly on the top of mountain, and only the clouds were busy above our heads moving along. After spending decent few hour on the summit dozing away on our sleep deprived heads, we finally descent to the bottom to make our next adventure to Bumpass Hell. 
On the path down to the bottom – impressive fauna tells the fertility of mineral rich soils.
Bumpass Hell–as one would suspect its possibly intended pun in the name–is actually the easiest hike in the park to see the best appeal of Lassen’s unique geological feature: hydrothermal pools.
After Bumpass Hell, our party continued on the trail to Cold Boiling Lake (which was really cold and rings true to its name) and concluded the hike at Kings Creek Picnic Area. At the end of the trail icy cold Kings Creek greeted us to cool down feet and wash our dust covered faces. 
In the video, you see the glimmering crimson sunset over Manzanita Lake. This was my favorite moment of this camping trip. Just as I thought the clouds were muffling the ray of setting sun, the sky blushed magically like its last statement to the rotating Earth. Witnessing the fleeting yet glorious red sunset over Manzanita Lake was something like watching the secret of the planet; like some unexplained mystery of ancient civilization unfolding its truth. 
Second, and last day in Lassen was concluded by the steep ascension to Cinder Cone. Cinder Cone was like an empty shell of what once has been the untouchables of nature now dormant and only speaks its past through the vacant crater. Sitting atop the caldera and gazing past the distant mountain was meditative experience.
Needless to say, this year’s parade was grand as expected from the influence of the news. However, on the flip side there was also an annoying hint of free advertisement and daftly woven marketing schemes; an allusive array of banners that say #lovewins along with equally conspicuous company logos and campaign names made it seems almost uncool for anyone not doing the same. Aside from overt competition amongst corporations, the whole event was quite a show to watch.
