Thailand captured in beautifully expired Ilford HP5 Plus

In February, I did a little nice adventure to Southeast Asia.

1-week in Thailand / 1-week in Cambodia.
Plan = Make every moment count.

As this was a form of short getaway trip, I have budgeted thoroughly and started to pack the items as minimal as possible to practice semi-backpacking trip. Here’s the stuff I packed:

1. 3 pairs of summer clothes +1 swimming pants. Taking South East Asia will be in gorgeous summer season for shorts and t-shirts. I packed just 3-pairs because the weather and humidity there will be absolutely perfect anyways for hand washing and drying clothes every days at the guest houses!

2. Diary. A slim Moleskine style bound notebook that I have been carrying around with me everywhere to write a summary of day’s experience in hand-writing. I’ve been writing diary for past 9-years and it is absolutely amazing way to keep track of life and most rewarding time capsule to look back in future! Highly recommended for any travelers/non-travelers to start a habit.

3. Nikon F5 + Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm f2.8 w/ 10 rolls of 35mm films. I just recently graduated from my Nikon FG-20 and bought this sweet film camera on eBay. It is not a “light” camera for backpacking by any means but I have exchanged the practicality for specific aesthetic choice. Most films that I have packed on this trip are expired Ilford, Agfa, Kodak stocks purchased on eBay. Expired photos tend to create grainy and bleached result, but it worked well for my choice because I wanted to shoot photos to capture the inconsistent mood of place and people rather than awkwardly perfect looking picture.

4. Toiletry and other daily supplies. Toothbrush, toothpaste, contact lenses, and deodorants. That’s it. Most of these are actually much cheaper to purchase in Thailand so it was mostly for my personal peace of mind. However, for anyone traveling South East Asia for first time, I highly recommend getting a box of aspirin and other medical supplies before departure. Especially, Imodium which is a nice medicine to have when your stomach gets hit my bad water and food. It will plunge a plug in draining tub.

5. Passport, 2 guidebooks for Thailand and Cambodia, and smartphone. Needless to say, passport is nice thing to have in case you are crossing one country’s border to enter another (you will need it always!) 🙂  I have not packed my bulky laptop with me since I didn’t need it (I shoot film photos so I can’t upload photos conveniently anyways). When I booked the hostel/guest houses I normally book only the hostels with wifi access, so smartphone is good enough to access the window to what’s going on in the Internet. Also, I always keep my phone on airplane mode to avoid sneaky network fees.

The first day in Thailand started wildly.
I arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok around 1am→ met my friends at the arrival gate→ then the next moment I was ready on the run to catch the early morning AirAsia flight down to Surat Thani. The first destination of this adventure trip was Koh Phangan, the paradise island on the Southern Thailand!
